How do I ask a storage facility if I can use power?
Last updated October 2026
Call before you sign anything, say exactly what you want to plug in, and get the answer in writing. Many leases ban using the facility’s power unless the owner approves it.
The lease is what counts, not a quick yes at the counter. One Virginia facility’s rental agreement says using the owner’s electricity for tools, machinery, or appliances is prohibited “without the prior written approval of Owner.” MN Storage’s agreement bans “operation of electrical appliances” in the unit, and a Maine facility’s lease bars using electricity for refrigerators, freezers, or other appliances.
StorageMart advises asking your local manager about units with outlets “before committing to a lease.” That’s the right time, while you can still choose another unit or facility.
Here’s what to ask:
- Which units have an outlet inside them, and is one available?
- I want to plug in a battery maintainer (or a dehumidifier, or a light). Is that allowed?
- Can it stay plugged in when I’m not there?
- How many amps is the outlet, and is anything else on that circuit?
- Is power included, a flat fee, or metered?
- Can you add that to my lease or an addendum?
Be specific about the device. A phone charger and a space heater are very different requests, and a facility that says yes to one may say no to the other.
Keep a copy of the signed lease or addendum. If the manager changes, that paper is what shows you were allowed to use the outlet.
