Can you charge an electric car at a storage facility?

At a few. Some storage facilities have added EV charging stations in their parking lots, but they’re still uncommon, and plugging an EV into an outlet inside a unit is a separate question to ask about.
The chargers that exist are mostly a side business. Inside Self Storage, an industry trade publication, reported in 2026 that Save It Self Storage in Lafayette, Louisiana, has added chargers, as have Attic Self Storage and Fort Knox Self Storage in San Francisco. It also said Extra Space Storage and SecureSpace host some chargers in California. Operators charge by the kilowatt hour, by the hour, or by subscription.
Some are open to anyone. A 2025 Inside Self Storage article said the Lafayette site’s charging “is open to everyone, not just tenants.” In Europe, Shurgard planned chargers at 70 sites in London and the Netherlands.
Charging inside a unit is harder. Most unit outlets are standard household outlets meant for small loads, and an EV can pull steady power for hours. We didn’t find a chain policy that allows it.
If you’re storing an EV, ask the facility:
- Do you have a charger on site, and what does it cost?
- Can I plug my car into the outlet at my space or unit?
- How many amps is the outlet, and is power billed separately?
For long storage, check your owner’s manual for how the maker wants the car left, then ask whether the space can support that.
