Do Extra Space storage units have outlets?

Last updated October 2026

At select locations only. Extra Space offers units with electrical access at some sites, and it says the quickest way to find one is to call a nearby facility.

Extra Space’s page on units with electricity says availability varies by facility and “some markets have waitlists.” So even a location with powered units may not have one open when you need it.

Our data shows how rare they are. Extra Space has 1,898 locations on our list, and we could read the pages for 948 of them. Of those, 22 list “Electrical access in units.” Another 26 say “Some units may come equipped with electrical outlets,” which we treat as a maybe, not a yes.

The rules matter as much as the outlet. Extra Space says “power access here is for charging and monitoring, not active use.” It lists charging tools and batteries, running a dehumidifier, and keeping a trickle charger on a vehicle battery as normal uses.

It also lists what isn’t allowed: leaving equipment running while you’re away, operating machinery, or using the unit as a workspace. The same page says treating the unit as a workspace “goes against your rental agreement.”

Before you sign, ask the facility:

  • Which units have an outlet, and is one open now?
  • How many amps does it carry, and is power billed separately?
  • Can I leave a dehumidifier or battery maintainer plugged in?

Former Life Storage locations are Extra Space locations now, so the same rules apply there.
